s pring Charteryacht Show Concludes After Impressive Weekend yacht
The Virgin Islands Charteryacht League (VICL) recently hosted its semiannual charteryacht show on May 3-6, at St. Thomas' Crown Bay Marina. More than 30 charter yachts participated in the show. The 10th Annual Spring Charteryacht Show was designed to familiarize established brokers, travel agents and other professionals who wish to become charter yacht brokers with USVI-based yachts and their crews so they may effectively sell charter yacht vacations. Participants engaged in three days of "get-acquainted receptions," viewing yachts on the docks and other exciting activities. USVI Tourism Department Celebrates National Tourism Week
The USVI Tourism Department is celebrating the 18th Annual Celebration of National Tourism Week, May 6-12, 2001. "The annual observance of National Tourism Week encourages communities, state tourism offices, and travel and tourism industry leaders to tell the story of tourism," said Acting Commissioner of Tourism Pamela C. Richards. "The observance promotes a wider understanding of travel and tourism as an industry that is vital to the economic and social well being. In the territory, we will combine the national theme, "Tourism Works for America" with a local theme of "Tourism: Our Culture Recognized; Our Culture Realized," which will be introduced during the series of related scheduled programs." Events such as the "Tourism Open House" and "Tourism Speaking out in Schools" will be held daily on St. Croix and St. Thomas. 13th Annual St. Croix Half Ironman Triathlon Attracts More Than 850 Competitors
The St. Croix Half Ironman Triathlon, held on Sunday, May 6, 2001, featured a 1.2-mile (two kilometers) swim from the beach at Hotel on the Cay to the dock at Fort Christiansvaern. From there, participants mounted their bikes for a challenging but scenic 35-mile (55 kilometers) bike race, past coral bays and sugar mills, and finally to the infamous hill known as "The Beast." The 7.4 miles (12 kilometers) run along country roadsides ended in downtown Christiansted. This year, Ryan Bolten (USA) finished first, and Joanna Zieger (USA) finished first for the women. The Triathlon serves as a qualifier for other prestigious international events such as the Ironman World Triathlon.
